DAN MATHIS
WORK DESCRIPTION: Loose-styled watercolor - Land and seascapes
BIOGRAPHY: Dan started painting as a teenager and discovered watercolor in the 90’s. Working primarily from his own photographs, he paints the quiet beauty of rural and coastal landscapes—farms, open fields, country churches, marshlands, beaches, and woodlands throughout Worcester and Accomack counties. He is inspired by the escape and immersion felt while painting and the satisfaction of creating something unique. His watercolor paintings aim to evoke mood and light rather than strict realism, allowing washes of color and expressive brushwork to tell the story of a place. He admires the looseness, abstract qualities, and especially the boldness of Alvaro Castagnet’s work.
Now retired and living in Greenbackville, Virginia, Dan balances his days with music, golf, and pickleball, though watercolor remains at the top of the list. He is a member of the Worcester County Arts Council in Berlin, Maryland, where his work can be seen. His work may also be seen in the Community Center (Marina Club) in Captains Cove, Greenbackville, VA. He also teaches 3 hour-long workshops every other month in Captains Cove, plus occasionally at the Village Neighbors on Chincoteague Island.
