Work Description: Himes paints in watercolor and more recently, fluid acrylics, with an age old glazing technique, building up layers of delicate color one at a time and letting each layer dry before adding the next.
The result is an atmospheric glow that evokes the serenity that the artist finds in the forest.
Himes has been exploring with an artist’s eye for over 30 years. She collects natural materials in season and usually draws and paints them from life.
The birds, small animals or butterflies who visit her studio often become subjects for paintings.
Biography: Sharon Himes is an artist and writer with a special interest in nature of eastern woodlands.
An amateur naturalist, much of her art reflects observation of flora and fauna in the Pocomoke Forest near her Snow Hill home.
Her paintings of wildflowers, shy birds, colorful mushrooms and other treasures tell the stories of the woodlands.
Recent Work: Her paintings have been featured in solo and group exhibitions and she is represented by several area galleries including Salisbury Art and Framing in Salisbury and Bishop’s Stock Gallery in Snow Hill
The woodland watercolors of Sharon Himes are in public and private collections and have appeared in magazine articles and several books. . Original art, gicleé reproductions and greeting cards are available online.
Ms. Himes is the founder and director of the ArtCafe Artists Network (http://www.Artcafe.net) where she has been writing articles on art techniques and art history since 1995.
Her work has been featured in American Artist magazine and is widely collected in the region. The book, Watercolor Artists Flower Handbook (Quarto 2006) by Patricia Seligman includes demonstrations and practical advice by thirteen leading floral artists including the chapter: 'Experiencing nature through sketching' by Sharon Himes showing her unique approach to painting wildflowers. Drawing and painting have always been a natural extension of her interest in botanical subjects. Her nature drawings illustrate books and magazines as well as informative signage along The Nature Conservancy's Paul Leifer Nature Trail and a mural at Furnace Town near Snow Hill.
Design Design Inc, a major greeting card company in WI, will produce a line of cards featuring Himes’ paintings in 2009.
